Beijing Olympics vendors selling strange item: Goldfish trapped in a keyring heart...aww...wait, what?

Animal cruelty organizations are up in arms over an unofficial Olympic games item being sold by waterfront vendors where Olympic sailing events are to be held. The item is a keyring that is attached to a plastic heart holding a goldfish. The outside of the heart has the image of one of the Olympic game’s mascots, a little boy named Huanhuan. What could be bad about the keyring, right? It’s cute enough and it looks like the fish has some space and air, well, not exactly.

You see, the bag holding the fish is completely sealed, making it impossible to keep the keepsake and keep the fish alive by, you know, feeding it and allowing it breathe. As a result,

“The fish would survive just a few hours, and would be lucky to make it from the manufacturers to the point of sale.

Really, what the heck was the person that came up with this thinking? There is no possible way he thought people would be alright with it. Of course, it’s possible they expect the buyer to break the package open and put the fish in a bigger tank but that’s unlikely considering the fish is marketed as a keyring, like the one you put in your pocket. Chances are the Chinese government will step in and stop it from being sold since it’s doing its best to keep outrage towards the country at a minimum. Still, we’re surprised this got to the manufacturing and distribution stage to begin with.
