George Chandler and a friend were doing some construction work in Shawnee, Kansas when there was a bit of an accident. His friend was above him nailing boards while Chandler stood below him working. At one point, the gun hose got tangled and set the gun off. The two men checked themselves for injuries and were satisfied when they realized they were all right except for the slight pain Chandler was experiencing at the top of his head. His friend checked it and was shocked to find the pain was from the nail that went through Chandler’s skull.
“It was just like a maybe like a sting, bite or something, you know,” Chandler said.
Chandler was rushed to the hospital where a doctor decided fancy surgery was unnecessary. Instead, he asked for a claw hammer and said “If that’s how it got in, that’s how we’ll get it out.” The doctor pulled it out without a problem and Chandler is expected to make a full recovery. He completely lucked out though.
Chandler’s family said that if the nail had entered his head just a millimeter lower, the nail could have left him paralyzed or caused serious damage to his speech or eyesight.
