Over 4,000 babies in China have been named “Aoyun” at birth, which literally means “Olympic Games.” The name has become popular because of the imminent hosting of the Olympic Games by China. Hundreds were named Aoyun after China first applied to host the Olympic Games in 1992, with hundreds more coming in 2002 after China was chosen to host this year’s games. The vast majority (92%) of the Aoyuns in China are boys. Apparently 290,708 people in China are also named “Civilization,” which is a pretty epic name. You aren’t just a person, but an entire society and culture! It’s a fairly popular practice in China to name children after popular events and slogans, with the recent disasters in China bringing about names like “Hope for Sichuan” and the like.
